Alright, alright, settle down you junglists! I’m here all week… unless 24 Karat Records kicks me off the lineup…
So Dj-Sinister is dropping The Street Shadow EP on 24 Karat, and let me tell you – this thing is like getting mugged by your own speakers. In a good way!
First track kicks in and I’m like: “Oh, so we’re doing dark and moody tonight?” It’s got breaks that sound like they’ve been lurking in a back alley since 1994, waiting for the right moment to jump out and shout “AMEN!” at you.
The basslines… man, Dj-Sinister didn’t just make basslines, he made auditory shadows. They follow you around the room, low and heavy, like “Yeah, I’m still here. You forgot about me?” Your chest is gonna check out before your ears do.
The textures on this EP are absolutely wild. It’s got vinyl crackle, distant atmospherics, vocal exerts that sound like someone whispering secrets through a drainpipe. It’s dark and broody, but not in that “I’m 14 and my dad doesn’t understand me” way. More like “I’ve seen some things in the rave and I’m not telling you what” way.
Best bit? It’s CLEAN. Dj-Sinister mixed this thing so tight you could wipe a table with it. But why would you? You’d be too busy wiping the sweat off your face from skanking too hard.
Look, if you like your jungle with atmosphere, weight, and a bit of menace, The Street Shadow EP is gonna stalk you in the best way. 24 Karat Records did it again – found the guy who makes music for the 3am slot when the lights are off and the floor is war.
Rating: 5/5 shadows out of 5
